B.R. Cohn

Wine:

Atmosphere:

Service:

Listen to the Doobie Brothers and other classic rock music while sipping some interesting and creative blends. Bruce Cohn, the proprietor, has been the manager of the Doobie Brothers since 1970. The grounds of this winery are meticulously landscaped, which definitely adds to the overall experience. You can buy food on site and have a picnic under the trees. Most famous for their cabs, B.R. Cohn offers a little bit for everyone. I didn?t LOVE any of the wines I tried, but there are definitely a number that I enjoyed, particularly their signature port.

Schug Carneros Estate Winery

Wine:

Atmosphere:

Service:

This unassuming spot caters to the true wine enthusiasts. The tasting room is small and quaint, but what it lacks in character is more than made up for by the quality of the wine and service. Known for its Pinot Noirs, Schug has an incredibly wide selection of reds, roses, and sparkling wines. I really enjoyed the Pinot Carneros, but the Cabernet Sauvignon was also exceptional for the price point, as was the merlot. Greg managed the pours on our visit and provided great insights into the wine and made our stop off one of the day?s highlights.

Jacuzzi Family Vineyards

Wine:

Atmosphere:

Service:

Jacuzzi is the latest project from the same family that owns Kline. Opened in 2007, this Italian focused winery has a definite Tuscan feel, complete with fountains and a lookout tower that provides great views of the surrounding vineyards. Tastings are offered free of charge and enable you to sample a wide range of Italian themed wines. Barbera is their best selling wine, which tasted similar to a Cab. My personal favorite was the Valeriano, a tasty blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petite Verdot. As an added bonus, Jacuzzi also offers free olive oil tastings.

Goosecross Cellars

Wine:

Atmosphere:

Service:

One of my favorite wineries in Napa. The service here is second to none. They are attentive, funny and go out of their way to make sure you get the most out of your visit. The fact that the wine is also great is a bonus in my view. Although the tasting room is small, it actually adds to the personality of the place. I will definitely be making more visits to this gem soon.

Beringer Vineyards

Wine:

Atmosphere:

Service:

I typically try to avoid the bigger wineries, as they often feel too crowded and impersonal, however we recently had some friends in town who wanted to see the grounds. I definitely enjoyed seeing the Rhine House. The highlight of our visit. I was surprised at how small the tasting room was however. During our tasting there were probably 30 people all crammed into a space that felt smaller than a MUNI bus. Although Beringer's wines do have a mass-produced feel to them, I have always enjoyed them as reasonable quality, decent value bottles. I would recommend joining their wine club, as I think it's good value for what you get.

Beaulieu Vineyard (BV)

Wine:

Atmosphere:

Service:

The tasting room felt a bit dated and lacked much character, but our pourer was incredibly friendly and knew a lot about the winery history. Apparently, BV was one of only a few wineries to remain open during the Prohibition. The wine itself is decent/ok, but I do have to give it special props for the fact that it shares my initials!

PlumpJack Winery

Wine:

Atmosphere:

Service:

Great wine tasting experience at PlumpJack during a recent trip to Napa Valley. I have always enjoyed their reds, but was blown away by their Chardonnay. The winery is owned by Gavin Newsom, San Francisco's current mayor. Very young, fun feel to the grounds, though we were disappointed to learn that they don't allow for picnics despite having ample outdoor space.

Silver Oak Cellars (Napa)

Wine:

Atmosphere:

Service:

Silver Oak produces some of my all-time favorite cabs. The winery was shut down by a fire in 2007, but they have rebuilt and now have a pretty hip, funky tasting room. Feels a bit like a W Hotel, as it is fairly modern. Service was very friendly on our recent trip, though the tasting fee was somewhat pricey for what you got ($20 for a flight of 3).

Kunde Estate Winery

Wine:

Atmosphere:

Service:

I always enjoy a trip to Kunde. The staff are incredibly helpful and friendly and the sprawling grounds provide a great backdrop to the tasting experience. Wine is priced very reasonable. I would definitely recommend the cave tour, which I believe is only offered on the weekends. Overall Kunde provides a great experience.

Ravenswood Winery

Wine:

Atmosphere:

Service:

I have had Ravenswood wines (particularly their Zins) on a number of occasions, and they always produce a pretty average experience. The winery itself is nice, but the tasting room felt cramped an impersonal.

Sebastiani Vineyards

Wine:

Atmosphere:

Service:

Convenient location, right in downtown Sonoma, but overall an average experience. The wines are decent, but I think there are far better. Also, while not rude, the staff in the tasting room were not the friendliest. The winery is worth a visit as the grounds are nice, but it wouldn't be one of my top picks in Sonoma.

Cline Cellars

Wine:

Atmosphere:

Service:

Great value, Rhone wines with free tastings. Wines were good, not great, but very affordable. Landscaping of the grounds is superb. Best part about it is the vibe. Very laid back and relaxed feel.

Domaine Carneros by Taittinger

Wine:

Atmosphere:

Service:

I'm usually not a champagne lover, but I must admit that Domaine Carneros produces some pretty amazing fizz (they also make a great Pinot Noir). The setting is spectacular as well. They have a really cool 18th-century (esque) Chateau. My only two complaints are that it tends to get very busy on the weekends, and the buzz from Hwy 12 can get a bit out of hand at times.

Benziger Family Winery

Wine:

Atmosphere:

Service:

I had heard great things about Benziger before a recent trip to Sonoma and therefore decided to pay a visit. I wasn't disappointed. Although it is not my favorite wine, they were the first biodynamic winery in the valley. They have a really interesting tractor tour that highlights the winery and information about biodynamic farming, and at $15 (which included a 4-flight tasting) it's great value.

Ledson Winery & Vineyards

Wine:

Atmosphere:

Service:

I used to visit this winery a lot as my parents lived nearby. The 'Castle' as it's known is a pretty interesting piece of architecture. Very Gothic feeling. The wine is pretty decent and reasonably priced. Definitely worth a visit if you're in or around Santa Rosa.

Gundlach Bundschu Winery

Wine:

Atmosphere:

Service:

This is the oldest family run winery in California and one of my favorite outdoor spaces in all of Wine Country. Visitors are encouraged to freely walk around the ample gardens and picnics are also allowed. I really enjoyed the Gew
