11/13/2009Beringer is ok all the way around. They have a few stand outs here and there, but you can always count on a certain level of quality from them. I would not recommend this place for the more educated palette, but for those who are trying to figure out what types of wine they like. The styles and blending are often soft, but it's a good place to start.

whether you take some new people up to the wine country or if you just want a place to relax, this is the winery. i don't mind going on the tour here because you learn a lot about the history of the winery and you get a real look at the land. ideal for photo spots. but because of the popularity of this place, the service tends to spread itself too thin. i have had times when i would have a comfortable tasting and other times when i would feel rushed so i can have other guests also try their wine.

I typically try to avoid the bigger wineries, as they often feel too crowded and impersonal, however we recently had some friends in town who wanted to see the grounds. I definitely enjoyed seeing the Rhine House. The highlight of our visit. I was surprised at how small the tasting room was however. During our tasting there were probably 30 people all crammed into a space that felt smaller than a MUNI bus. Although Beringer's wines do have a mass-produced feel to them, I have always enjoyed them as reasonable quality, decent value bottles. I would recommend joining their wine club, as I think it's good value for what you get.

Beringer seems to be one of the most popular spots in Napa - I'm not really sure why. The grounds are cool and I do like the historic Rhine House. However, the main tasting room is fairly small. The staff doesn't seem as professional or engaged as other wineries. If you visit, I would recommend stumping up the extra cash to taste in the Rhine House - it's definitely a better setting. As for their wines, I guess that they are good quality for the price but I think the quality gap between the reserve bottle and regular bottles is very wide. The reserve bottles of the cab are usually quality but I am less excited of their other wines.
