In the vast, sometimes hauty, nouveau-riche vale of vines that the world knows as Napa Valley, Milat Vineyards is a diamond in the rough. Many of the highbrow wineries in St. Helena (and elsewhere in the Napa region) tend to cater to gods and kings, Milat takes a more grass roots, brick-and-mortar approach in its wine tasting room. Milat hearkens to Napa days of yore, before exorbitant $20.00 tasting fees, cavalier tasting room staff and winery owners whose appearance on the winery premises are so rare they have become the stuff of local legend. At Milat, the winery owners Mike and Bob (or their wives) gleefully pour their selections for you. The space is intimate, and spending a day listening them regale their exploits in the wine industry makes the experience there exciting and fun. Milat is family-owned (no conglomerates or corporate wineries have claimed them-yet). Milat produces a 2006 Merlot that will make your tongue curl with pleasure. Other notables include a 2007 Zinfandel and a chocolate Port Sauce. Highly recommended.
