Formerly known as Niebaum-Coppola this winery was renamed Rubicon Estate to move the focus away from it's owner, Director Francis Ford Coppola. The Rubicon Estate was named in honor of Julius Caesar's famous crossing of the Rubicon River, in 49 BC, to confront Pompey and led to the establishment of the Roman Empire. The property was previously known as Inglenook. Before being known for cheap bulk Chablis, Inglenook wines were widely acclaimed.
The winery has many offerings from the Captain's Reserve portfolio to the Estate Wines. Prices are reasonable for Napa Valley wines with the crown jewel being the aptly named Rubicon. Primarily Cabernet Sauvignon with a hint of Petite Verdot, the 2005 Rubicon received a score of 93 from the Wine Spectator and 96 from WINE & SPIRITS.
The property is special and well worth a visit. There are several tours to chose from and each is rich in the history of the winery and the vineyards. I learn something new with each visit.
