Been visiting since the early 1980's.
Get on the early wine tour; not as busy and taste buds are better in the am than later in the day. Plus it's decadent...

Shafer is a must for those that enjoy wine. Every wine, every year is outstanding. Of the 103 California wineries we have visited Shafer is our personal favorite. Situated in the Stags Leap District the winery is open for tastings, by appointment, twice a day (10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.). The tasting will take you through their five offerings. Appointments fill up quickly and it is advised that you book at least a month in advance.
Chardonnay - from the Red Shoulder Ranch vineyard in the Carneros region. This wine is crisp with a taste of melon. Medium bodied white with good acidity. The acidity is helped by the consistent cool growing season in the Carneros region.
Merlot - While we enjoy some Merlot wines the Shafer wines always impress. This wine has a long finish with black jam fruits, chocolate, and smoke.
Cabernet Sauvignon - The one point five Cabernet Sauvignon was named for the two generations working together (John and Doug), versus the winery being handed down to the second generation. A good story you'll hear at your tasting!
Syrah - Relentless is a field blend of Syrah and Petite Sirah. Named for the "relentless" effort long-time winemaker Elias Fernandez puts into the quality of all Shafer wines, this field blend is another Shafer offering that does not fail to deliver!
Hillside Select - This Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% sourced from select grapes off the Hillside vineyards surrounding the Estate. Aged nearly four years before being released these wines are built to last 20+ years. A long finish with lots of black fruit, dark chocolate, spice and a hint of oak.
Cheers!
